I don't know if this is the right place to post, but it seems relevant to hikers all over -
I'm volunteering right now at a goat farm in the Negev, called Ezuz, which is right off a massive bike trail that runs through the desert. It is along the Egyptian border. I've been here for three months and a lot of backpackers and hikers and travelers have passed through here, working for a month or two, saving money, exploring the area, and then moving on.
the goat farm is a small operation - there are usually 2-3 volunteers, plus the farm family. the work is incredible - the volunteers usually take out the goats (and some sheep) in the early morning to grazing in the desert. It's not very difficult work and it's a chance to explore the desert for some hours every morning. The afternoon is free - from about 10-5 or 6, and then there's the evening milking.
room - a private caravan - and board are provided, but days off.
It's a very awesome place. I love it - i came to see if i'd like it and never left for three months.
So, if you're backpacking through israel and the middle east and this sounds like a cool thing to do, give it a shot. you can email or call, dror and celia friede. they both speak english.

Really, i love this place and I recommend it to anybody who wants to come and do some cool work in a nice atmosphere for a little while, while resting from the strains of the trail.
As the french say,
