Acco, also called Acre, Akko, is one of the northernmost cities on Israel's Mediterranean coast in the Western Galilee region.
Acco is a holy city in the Baha’i faith, hosting several shrines and Holyland spots that have led to its inclusion as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
This quaint little town offers a taste of both old and new to independent travelers and backpackers.
The Acco town projects out into the sea, surrounded by water on three
sides. It lets you enjoy a comfortable stay packed with authentic

Acre has a population of around 46,000 inhabitants. About two thirds of the population are Jewish, one third are Arab Israelis.
Acco Cheap Accommodation

Acco and to the west galilee.

The Acco Market
The main market of old Acre, located in Market Street, hosts stalls selling fish, sweet oriental pastries and every spice you can think of.

The Acco Market is always buzzing with activity, a great place to get a good impression of the local culture. One of the best hummus places in Israel called “Saeid” is just around the corner.
If you’re into arts and crafts, the Turkish Bazaar is the place to go. You’ll find small shops there filled with souvenirs, paintings and artistic objects.
Further down is the White Market, named after the white limestone on which it has been built. This market has countless little passageways and is covered with a ceiling, its light and colourful appearance makes it a joyful experience.
Restaurants in Acco
Acco is home to a wide range of local and international restaurants; authentic Middle Eastern foods like falafel and hummus are most popular. Various places in the beach area offer delicious seafood.
Acco Beach
Acco has a beautiful sand beach that is usually filled with tourists and locals. You’ll have lots of fun on this beach, it is perfect for tanning, playing volleyball or enjoying one of the many available water sports.
Acco Nightlife
Strolling down the little streets of Acco at night is a charming experience. Pubs, bars and clubs are scattered throughout the town and exotic Arab music fills the air. “Burj's Rooftop” is a popular nightclub where young and vibrant locals party the night away together with tourists.
Walls and Fortress of Acco
The walls and the great old fortress are Acco’s main attractions. The original walls were built in the 11th century and the fortress in the 13th century. Today’s walls were built around 1800, they are still completely intact and unbelievably thick, with watchtowers and protected by guns. The fortress was also used as a prison; it has been partially restored but retains its original charm.
Visitors can take an exclusive tour through secret corridors, winding staircases and underground water cisterns.
No visit to Acco is complete without a walk on its walls and a visit to the fortress!
Hiking Acre and hiking around Acco
You have two options for walking in Acco itself: You can go for a stroll on the endless beach, or you can decide to explore Akko’s old town. Most aged monuments and buildings are lined up along the scenic coastline, separated by high-walled alleys and underground passages.
Galilee, the famous Biblical mountain area surrounding Acco, offers breathtaking scenic views and a multitude of hiking trails to the active traveller. It is also home to an important chunk of the Israel National Trail, on which you can cross the entire country.
For backpackers, Acco offers a great combination of fun on the beach with rich cultural and historical experiences. The local people are unpretentious and their friendly vibe is infectious. You can expect nothing less than a real good time in Acco!

Driving distances, Acre:
Nazareth - 20 minutes.
Safed - 30 minutes.
Haifa - 30 minutes.
Kinneret, Tiberius - 40 minutes.
Public transportation to Acre:
- The Acco Railway Station
- Bus no. 1 from the Central Bus Station of Acre
